About the Technique

Nerikomi is a Japanese ceramic technique where coloured clays are layered and patterned so the design runs through the clay rather than sitting on the surface.
The patterns emerge naturally as the clay is cut and shaped, creating clean geometric designs and subtle colour harmony.
Porcelain is especially effective, the white body responds well to ceramic stains and stunning colours are easily achievable.
The method requires some patience, much time is spent preparing the clay through various techniquee before anything gets built.
After a bisque firing the work is sanded with wet and dry to create a smooth texture and fired to 1220 degrees centigrade.
The finished pieces are lightly sanded again and coated in mineral oil to enhance the surface designs.
